I grew up in New Brunswick with French Toast and Ketchup but we called it “Egg Toast.”
I was doing field work near Baker, Montana, and I instructed the cook at the restaurant how to do the French Toast with ketchup on the side instead of syrup or powdered sugar. One day I left my purse (and phone there). The owner recognized my bag as having belonged to “the lady who takes her French Toast with ketchup!” She remembered the contractor who I was working for and tracked him down in Billings, and he, in turn called my husband!”
It is quite simple, regular French toast but seasoned with salt and lots of pepper. Then ketchup on the side! Lots of people have scrambled eggs and ketchup, why not French Toast?
