Peace – Knowing what I will do next.

Daily writing prompt
What brings you peace?

Photo of a hand made quilt (possibly from Hawaii). Repairing this quilt will offer peace for the sewer to have a project for the remaining of her Sew40 endeavor. It will also offer a time to pray for the victims of the wildfires in Hawaii.

Earlier this month I posted about my Sew40 project of sewing every day for 40 days. I am on Day 24 and part of my quest is showing through. I wondered at the onset, how Sew40 would reveal things about me, what brings me joy and peace. I would love to hear if sewing, mending in particular, is a peaceful time for others. For me, the inspiration to do a forty day project came from trying to work through how badly I had been treated by an institution. Amazingly, I have been able to let go much of the hurt. I hope other people can find peace from doing the same or something similar.

I first realized how writing and making connections gave me great joy. I find peace to be different. I have 16 days to go but and I realized that I felt peace in a surprising fashion. I would have thought peace came in viewing a “job well done”. Or looking for a project to do. No, I realized the biggest joy for me was knowing what I would do next. It is a relief knowing the task that awaits me. Today it was finishing securing a pocket on my husband’s shorts using velcro. Tomorrow it will be shortening the pant legs on his new hiking pants (the kind that convert to shorts with a zipper).

I feel like the small projects are coming to an end. I also know that I am not in the mainframe to create anything. I only want to “fix” or “mend”. I am going to sew out my forty days by repairing an old quilt that I believe is a Hawaiian pattern. It was originally sewn with inferior thread and much of it needs resewing by hand. It is not a job for a machine.

I don’t know where this will lead, I may sell it, but for now, mending it is what matters and it gives me a chance to peacefully pray for the victims of the wildfire in Hawaii this past week.
